How many classes may I miss and still receive the certificate?
If you miss more than two sessions with an individual module, you have missed too much time to satisfactorily complete that module. It is important to show up for every class, barring some unforeseen obstacle, such as an emergency or illness. We highly recommend asking another class member to take copious notes if you are going to be absent.
Please remember to sign in and out of each class each evening, so you will receive credit for being present. The University is legally required to track the attendance record for each student who receives continuing education credits.
What if I'm late to class?
Attendance is based on a total number of contact hours, so it is important to always come to class on time. Arriving late is disruptive for the instructor and other participants. Classes will begin at 6:00 pm sharp and will conclude at 9:00 pm. Quizzes are often given at the beginning of a class session, and getting to class later might result in missing a quiz.
What kind of grades do I need to finish the program successfully?
To receive the University’s certificate and continuing education units, students must pass each of the six course modules with a minimum grade of 75% AND they must also obtain an overall grade of 75% in all course modules combined. At the end of each course module, students will be given an examination on the material covered in that section of the program. Students will receive a letter notifying them of their score for each exam as well as their averages at that time.
What if I need to miss a Mid-Term or Final Exam?
If you miss a mid-term or final exam, you will need to email the Program Director at cwood35@uncc.edu to reschedule the exam. Exams may be rescheduled Monday thru Thursday, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.
How will quizzes be counted and what if I miss a quiz?
Students are allowed to drop or throw away their two lowest grades on quizzes. If you miss a class in which a quiz is given, the missed test will count as one of the quizzes you drop.
What is the grading policy?
The grading system for each of the six course modules is as follows.
· Quizzes will count 10% (lowest two grades dropped)
· Mid term exam will count 25%
· Final exam will count 65%
· There is an exception in the seventh module, which is the Case Studies / Capstone Session which consists of 27 instructional hours. The final grade for this module is based on quizzes only, which count 100% (with the two lowest grades dropped).
· Students who score 50 or higher on a final exam are allowed a single opportunity to retake the final in an attempt to achieve a passing grade in that particular module. If, after the retake, a passing grade has not been achieved, students are required to resit the module the next time it is offered on a space available basis.
· Students who score 49 or below on a final exam are ineligible to retake the final and are required to resit the module the next time it is offered on a space available basis.
What is CFP® Certification?
CFP® Certification is a nationally and internationally recognized professional certification. Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. awards the CFP, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and
to individuals that fulfill initial and ongoing certification requirements: satisfy the educational requirements, three to five years of work experience in a financial planning field, pass the CFP Certification Examination, compliance with CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility, continuing education and recertification.
Why are the CFP® Certification Requirements Important?
Most people think that all financial planners are "certified," but this isn’t true. Anyone can call himself or herself a "financial planner." Only those who have fulfilled the certification and renewal requirements of CFP Board can display the CFP® certification marks. When selecting a financial planner, you need to feel confident that the person you choose to help you plan for your future is competent and ethical. The CFP® certification provides that sense of security by allowing only those who meet the following requirements the right to use the CFP certification marks.
What is the process of attaining the CFP ® certification?
In order to obtain the CFP ® certification, there are the four Es: Education, Examination, Experience and Ethics.
Education: CFP® professionals must develop their theoretical and practical financial planning knowledge by completing a comprehensive course of study at a college or university offering a financial planning curriculum approved by CFP Board. Other options for satisfying the education component include submitting a transcript review or previous financial planning-related course work to CFP Board for review and credit, or showing the attainment of certain professional designations or academic degrees.
***** Beginning in 2007, in addition to fulfilling the education requirement, a bachelor's degree in any discipline will be required in order to attain CFP certification. The college degree requirement is a condition of initial certification; it is not a requirement to be eligible to take the CFP® Certification Examination and does not have to occur before sitting for the exam or fulfilling the work experience. A bachelor's degree in any major from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university will be accepted, and evidence (photocopy of degree) will be required at the final stage of initial certification. Those individuals that successfully pass the educational requirements and pass the CFP® Exam have up to 5 years from the date of the exam to earn and submit evidence of a bachelor degree to the CFP Board.
Examination: CFP® practitioners must pass a comprehensive two-day, 10-hour CFP® Certification Examination that tests their ability to apply financial planning knowledge in an integrated format. Based on regular research of what planners do, the exam covers the financial planning process, tax planning, employee benefits and retirement planning, estate planning, investment management and insurance.
Experience: CFP® professionals must have three years minimum experience in the financial planning process prior to earning the right to use the CFP certification marks. As a result, CFP® practitioners possess financial counseling skills in addition to financial planning knowledge.
Ethics: As a final step to certification, CFP® practitioners agree to abide by a strict code of professional conduct, known as CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility, that sets forth their ethical responsibilities to the public, clients and employers. CFP Board also performs a background check during this process, and each individual must disclose any investigations or legal proceedings related to their professional or business conduct.
What is Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards?
CFP Board is a nonprofit professional regulatory organization. CFP Board was founded in 1985 and exists to benefit the public by establishing and enforcing requirements for CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER ™ certificates. It is funded by the fees it collects for examination and certification. CFP Board also registers educational programs in financial planning. Registered educational programs, such as the CFP Certificate Program at UNC Charlotte, satisfy CFP Board’s educational requirement. For more information, visit www.cfp.net or call 303-830-7500.
What is the format of the CFP® Certification Exam?
The CFP® Certification Exam is a rigorous professional exam given over a two-day period for a total of 10 hours. The CFP® Certification Examination is a 10-hour examination, divided into one four-hour session (Friday afternoon) and two three-hour sessions (Saturday). The exam is offered three times a year – March, July and November.
The exam consists of multiple choice questions and three major case problems. The exam tests comprehension, synthesis and evaluation as well as knowledge of facts and terms.
What happens once I have become Certified?
Once certified, CFP® practitioners are required to maintain technical competence and fulfill ethical obligations. Every two years, they must complete a minimum 30 hours of continuing education to stay current with developments in the financial planning profession and better serve clients. Two of these hours are spent studying or discussing CFP Board’s Code of Ethics or Practice Standards. In addition to the biennial continuing education requirement, all CFP practitioners voluntarily disclose any public, civil, criminal or disciplinary actions that may have been taken against them during the previous two years as part of the renewal process.
Do I have to renew my certification?
Yes. Once you have been authorized to use the CFP marks, you must meet CFP Board's renewal standards to continue to use them. Your CFP® certification must be renewed every two years at the end of your renewal month in an odd or even year (based on your birth date.) In order to position you in the correct period, your initial continuing education (CE) requirement and renewal fee are prorated.
The renewal requirements are 1) renewal application, 2) $360 renewal fee (non-refundable), and 3) 30 hours of CE. The CE requirement includes 28 hours in the accepted financial planning topics and two hours from a pre-approved program on CFP Board's Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility or Financial Planning Practice Standards. CE hours may be reported to CFP Board as they are completed by logging in to CFP Board's Web site.
The renewal fee helps cover the costs associated with ethics enforcement, protection of the marks against infringement, maintenance of professional standards of practice and public awareness activities related to the CFP marks.
Notification of your renewal requirements will be sent to you approximately four months before your certification expires.
