Complete 5 core courses to earn the certificate OR enroll in any two-day course without working toward the certificate.
Developed in partnership with UNC Charlotte, Diversity Council of the Carolinas, the Charlotte Regional Partnership, Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and Time Warner Cable, this program is designed for businesses interested in learning more and building capacity for managers to be better prepared for success in leading today’s diverse workforce and in reaching diverse markets.
Recognizing the variety of resources, needs and interests in this region, this curriculum is intentionally designed for optimal flexibility as a complete program, or to allow participation for individual sessions.
For companies without existing or in-house management-level diversity and inclusion education programs – this is a great stand-alone program.
For companies already engaged in management-level diversity and inclusion education programs – this program can augment, enhance or extend your current offerings via either the “full sequence” or by participation in individual topic sessions.
Note: Only those who complete the entire program (5 required courses) will receive the official Diversity and Inclusion Certificate.

Who Should Attend this Program?
This program is designed for senior managers and mid-level managers who oversee employees of different nationalities or cultural backgrounds and who want to leverage the strengths of a multicultural workforce to maximize team performance.
Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program Requirements
To earn the Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion you must complete five courses. The Diversity and Inclusion Program consists of five, two-day courses (listed below) that will be delivered from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm each day. Check-in begins on site at 8:00 am. Lunch will be provided during a 60-minute break.

March 4-5, 2008

Differences in age, race, family responsibilities, gender, sexual orientation, thinking styles and disabilities make today’s workforce more diverse than ever before. Managing a Diverse Workforce for Peak Performance

Marketing and Branding to a Diverse Audience
March 11-12, 2008

Regional and national demographics have shifted dramatically over the last 3 decades. Companies recognize the significant economic impact of multi-cultural markets and view diversity marketing as an effective tool in connecting with diverse constituencies. Businesses need to ensure that they effectively communicate their brand and messages in a deliberate fashion to engage diverse members of their potential customer base as well as their own internal clients and employees. Businesses must understand the centrality of marketing the launch of a new or innovated product or service.

Diversity and Risk Management
April 15-16, 2008

While companies that attend to the benefits of creating a diverse and inclusive culture may reap many benefits, for those organizations that do not - they may face difficult challenges. Every manager in an organization should be thoroughly aware of these potential liabilities (ranging from missed opportunities to civil litigation).

Leading and Sustaining Diversity Initiatives
May 6-7, 2008
Instructor: Mr. Natan Feldman, The HR Group, Inc.
Diversity initiatives may be forged in the office of the CEO, in HR or through a committee, but it is the responsibility of management across all levels of an organization where the rubber meets the road. Managers across all levels are often charged with demonstrating their company’s success in this area. This program helps given them the perspective, skills and tools necessary to bring diversity concepts and initiatives into real-life workplace application.

- Assessing and measuring efficacy of diversity efforts

Available Credit
Each course has been approved by the University to award 1.3 CEUs (Continuing Education Units). The Diversity and Inclusion Program, which includes all five courses, has been approved to award 6.5 CEUs.
To receive your record of attendance, full participation is expected. Participants must sign in at the beginning of the course and again after the lunch break, and be in attendance at the conclusion of the course, in order to receive the record of attendance. Participants who arrive late to a course, or leave a course early, will have their credit hours adjusted accordingly.

Dr. Barbara Riley, Managing Partner of Chambers Group LLC brings extensive expertise to large systems culture change, executive coaching and development, human capital planning and OD/Diversity interventions. Contributing over twenty-five years of consulting experience with Fortune 500 companies including Wachovia Corporation, Corning Inc., Shell Oil, Kodak, SC Johnson Wax, and numerous not-for-profit and educational organizations, Dr. Riley brings a wisdom that grounds her coaching in both personal development and the real world of business success. Barbara believes we are all given enormous gifts that when nurtured and developed, can be placed in service to transform the world. Dr. Riley completed her doctorate at Boston University, M.S. at Smith College and received her BA in psychology from Hofstra University. She is certified in Parallel Thinking™ and The Leadership Circle 360™ Profile. Dr. Riley is a past faculty member of Boston University and a member of the NTL Institute of Applied Behavioral Science.
Dr. Gary F. Kohut is a professor in the Department of Management in the Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte. Dr. Kohut’s teaching and research include the impact of technology on commun`ication and productivity, and communication and productivity strategies for managerial effectiveness. He has published numerous articles in both academic and practitioner-oriented journals, and chapters and cases in communications, management, and marketing books. He has also spent several years in industry working as a manager for a major food products manufacturer, a large insurance company, and a marketing research firm.
Dr. Kohut has provided multiple Continuing Education programs in leadership and communications for companies such as Ingersoll-Rand, Lowe’s, American Express, Julius Blum, Inc., Bank of America, Wachovia, TIAA-CREF, Balfour Beatty Construction, General Dynamics and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. In 2002, Gary was the recipient of the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence. In May 2006, Gary received the “Outstanding Chapter Speaker Award” by the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Gail Martin spent nearly 20 years in corporate and consulting roles before launching DreamSpinner Communications. She has worked with non-profit and for-profit organizations in many industries, including: health care, trade associations, professional services, food and beverage, real estate, utilities, banking, software/information services and more. Her professional background includes positions with Duke Energy, CarolinaHome.com and Signet Bank. In addition to her consulting work, Gail is an adjunct professor for UNC Charlotte and a part-time instructor for CPCC who teaches public speaking, public relations writing and corporate communications strategies.
Gail’s articles have appeared in over 40 publications. Recent articles have appeared in Ventures Charlotte, Charlotte Parent, BusinessToday, SouthPark Magazine, Charlotte Weekly, Saathee, University City Magazine, Cabarrus Business and Lifestyles and Sojourners Magazine.
Gail holds an MBA from The Pennsylvania State University, and a BA from Grove City College. She is a member of the following organizations: Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce, eWomenNetwork, North Carolina Writers Network, Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA).
Kristi K. Walters is Special Counsel for the Regulatory Department and Director of Professional Development and Diversity at Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP.
Kristi has experience in employment counseling and litigation and regularly advises and represents clients in the following areas:
- EEOC proceedings and litigation under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act
- Sexual harassment
- Issues arising under the North Carolina Wage and Hour Act, the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act
- Implementation of reductions in force
- Wrongful discharge, retaliation, breach of contract, infliction of emotional distress and other claims arising out of the employment relationship
- Covenants not to compete, confidentiality agreements and protection of trade secrets and other proprietary information
- Supervisor and management training
- Specific personnel actions such as hiring, evaluations, discipline and terminations
- Preparation and revision of employee handbooks and employment policies
- Drafting and review of employment agreements, restrictive covenants and confidentiality agreements
- Matters related to legal issues faced by colleges and universities, including faculty tenure issues, review of faculty and student handbooks and Department of Education proceedings under Title VI and Title IX
- Ms. Walters writes articles on employment law topics and participates in seminars on employment law issues. She also served as an instructor for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte's Human Resource Training and Development in 2005-2006. Ms. Walters is also a member of the Mecklenburg County Bar, Special Committee on Diversity, 2006-present.
Natan Feldman is a Bi-lingual Cultural Specialist and Training Consultant that has more than 20 years of experience in Spanish translations and interpretations, with an ability to translate or interpret for audiences of varied educational levels. Translations are done not just in language, but more importantly in culture. With his engineering background, he can translate all levels of technical, operations and manufacturing manuals.
He developed his training career over the last 20 years, starting as quality assurance director for various textile companies doing in-house “how-to” training. This evolved over time to organizational development and training for all levels of employees, varying from management to support. His areas of training expertise include diversity, leadership development, project management, customer service, teambuilding and negotiation training.
Natan has provided training for a multitude of industries including banking, medical, manufacturing and construction. Through his company Bravo, he helped in the development of custom-designed programs, both US and Internationally. The multicultural approach that he uses helps individuals understand how diverse cultural backgrounds impact communication, performance and productivity. Natan has worked with such notable customers as Nike, Carolinas Medical Center, and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce among others.
He has also conducted training in the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Brazil.
Attendance Policy
Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program
To qualify to receive a Diversity and Inclusion Program Certificate, a participant must attend at least 85% of the scheduled instructional hours in each of the five courses in the program. A participant cannot miss more than 2 hours of instructional class time per course in order to receive the Certificate. Make-up hours will not be granted.

Refund and Cancellation Policy
Refund and Cancellation Policy for Certificate Program:
Registrants canceling their registration prior to 5:00 pm on the earlier date below will receive a refund of all money they have paid and will owe no further payments to UNC Charlotte.
Registrants canceling their registration after 5:00 pm on the earlier date below and before 5:00 pm on the later date below will receive a refund of any monies paid minus a $350 late cancellation fee.
An individual who must cancel his or her registration may send a qualified substitute in his or her place, provided the substitute is identified to UNC Charlotte by 5:00 pm on the dates below.
No refunds will be made for those who fail to attend the program.

Reservation of Rights
UNC Charlotte reserves the right to substitute instructors, change the day a program meets, change the location of a program, or cancel programs due to insufficient enrollment or unforeseen events. If UNC Charlotte must cancel a program, participants will be given a full refund of the registration fee. The University is not responsible for non-refundable plane fares, hotel and car deposits, or any other expenses incurred by registrants in programs.

The course fees are payable in advance. Registration is not complete and will not be confirmed until we receive full payment or company billing information, which will be acknowledged with a receipt or company invoice, confirmation letter, map and parking information.
